- Genre: Fiction
- Content: H-8... (1958) On a rainy night in 1957, a bus and a truck collide on a Croatian highway, leaving 8 people dead. An unidentified car driver who caused the crash flees the scene, with witnesses catching a glimpse of only the first two characters of his license plate. This real-life tragedy served as an inspiration for H-8..., voted the best Croatian feature film of all time in a 2020 critics poll. In their portrayal of the passengers’ lives in the hours prior to the accident, director Nikola Tanhofer and screenwriter Zvonimir Berković (later to become a remarkable director in his own right) introduced a series of technical and narrative innovations to the Croatian cinema. H-8… won universal acclaim for its unique structure, gripping tension, and character development, while some film historians also regard it as an Eastern European forerunner of the disaster movie genre highly popular in the American cinema of the ‘70s.
