The National Archives of the Ministry of Justice of Georgia has begun publishing archival materials uncovered within the framework of the “Georgian Antiquities” project.
Significant documents related to Georgian antiquities, including lists, photographs, sketches, and drawings, are preserved in the central and regional archives of the National Archives of Georgia. The public is well aware of the largest cases of treasure removal from Georgia between the 18th and 20th centuries, including the property of royal family members, treasures relocated to the North Caucasus, and antiquities transported to France. While a considerable portion of these treasures has been returned, some remain lost or are housed in various foreign museums and private collections. Archival materials serve as an irreplaceable source for researching this issue.
The scientific department of the National Archives has been working on this project for several years. Dozens of photographs and written documents related to Georgian antiquities have been identified and annotated. The project’s objective is to compile, study, and analyze the archival materials on this subject, ultimately preparing a monographic study and an album.
The National Archives continues its work on the project and will periodically present newly discovered findings and research results to the public.
