A delegation from the National Archives of the Ministry of Justice of Georgia, along with other professionals and researchers in the archival field, attended the 35th Convention of the International Centre for Archival Research (ICARUS) in Venice.
The meeting focused on innovative approaches necessary for the preservation and accessibility of documentary heritage. Discussions addressed the development of shared data spaces for archival documents, the digitization of historical records, and the creation of machine-readable formats. Participants also examined the impact of information technologies on archival practices, contributing to greater accessibility and interactivity of historical materials.
The experience shared at the convention underscored the importance of technological innovation, international cooperation, and the need for archival institutions to adapt to the digital era.
During the event, Giorgi Sopromadze, Deputy Director General of the National Archives of Georgia, met with Birgit Kibal, President of ICARUS, and Andrea Erboso, Director of the State Archives of Venice and host of the convention. The parties highlighted prospects for future cooperation and opportunities for joint initiatives. The Georgian delegation also toured the Venice State Archives and learned about the specific nature of their work on site.
The ICARUS Convention serves as an international professional platform that brings together specialists from archival institutions across various countries, supporting deeper collaboration, the exchange of experience and initiatives, and the implementation of joint projects.
The National Archives of Georgia has been a member of the International Centre for Archival Research (ICARUS) since 2013.
