The anniversary exhibition of Vakhtang VI has opened at the National Archives of Georgia

The National Archives of the Ministry of Justice of Georgia has dedicated an exhibition to the 350th anniversary of the birth of King Vakhtang VI.

The exhibition presents documents issued by the king, his autograph manuscripts, Old printed books of the first Georgian printing house and other documents related to the life and work of Vakhtang VI.

King Vakhtang VI (1675-1737), ‘Janishini’ of Kartli (an old Georgian title, meaning a deputy or regent; Kartli is the historical name of the central Georgian Kingdom) (1703-1712), King of Kartli (1716-1724) was born on september 15, 1675. His tutor and teacher was Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani. Vakhtang had studied philosophy, theology, history, Jurispudence, mathematics, astronomy, geography, chemistry. During his reign, a legislative apparatus and the first Georgian printing press were established, started minting of new Georgian coins with Georgian inscriptions and the European numeral system; He restored and built churches, created an irrigation system, and more. Of particular note from his period of activity were the suppression of ‘captive buying’ and the formation of the Royal Guard.

The exhibition will continue at the National Archives Exhibition Pavilion until the end of November. Admission is free.
