Modernization of the National Archives of Georgia Continues

After the Exhibition Pavilion of the National Archives, the modern standard Cinema Hall will be opened.  The Ministry of Justice has launched another big project to get acquainted with the documents preserved in the National Archive of Georgia.

In the building of the National Archives, near the new Exhibition Pavilion a multifunctional cinema hall, equipped with latest techniques, will be arranged.

The Cinema Hall was functioning from the late 1970s to the beginning of the 1990s. At that time, its main purpose was to show thematic filmmaking. Due to technical problems, cinema hall had lost its function for more than 25 years.

In the renovated Cinema Hall of the National Archives, with 3D supporting digital equipment, the projector will be installed, which will provide the highest quality of the film screening. The audio and acoustic system of the hall will be arranged with modern standards.

The National Archives is the largest repository of documentary films and film magazines throughout Georgia. Here is preserved: 5252 documentary film; 3194 news reels; 1032 film chronicles, 111 fictions and 38 animated films.

After opening the Cinema Hall, the National Archives will be able to organize Archival Film Festivals and thematic shows to make the richest film storage accessible to the public of Georgia.

In addition, the new cultural space will be the place for the newcomers of the cinematographic industry to demonstrate their diploma or debut works.

Besides the cinema shows, it will be possible to hold conferences and other large-scale events in the new hall.

The cinema hall will fit the needs of the people with disabilities.

Architectural Company "Wall" - the winner of the competition - works on the renovation project.

With the support of the Ministry of Justice in the last four years a number of construction projects were implemented in the National Archives: Kvemo Kartli regional archive building in Rustavi was constructed and opened; as well as Kakheti regional archive building in Telavi; Samegrelo Regional Archive Building in Zugdidi; Exhibition Pavilion in Tbilisi.  Today construction of Kutaisi Central Archive is under way.
